The civil aviation administration of China (CAAC) held a press conference on Wednesday, April 15, at which the CAAC spokesman and major officials of relevant departments and bureaus released the data of safety and production operation of civil aviation in the first quarter and March, and introduced the operation situation after the reduction of international flights and the resumption of flights in hubei province.

SAFETY

In March, the whole industry completed 417,000 flight hours of transport, a year-on-year decrease of 58.8%; No transport aviation accidents reported. By the end of March, China's transport aviation had been flying safely for 115 months, 82.44 million hours.

PRODUCTION OPERATION

In March, the total transportation turnover was 3.9 billion ton-km, down 63.4% year on year. A total of 15.13 million passenger trips were completed, down 71.7% year on year. The completed freight and mail traffic volume was 484,000 tons, down by 23.4% year on year.

It is worth mentioning that the freight volume of all freighters bucked the trend and completed a total of 253,000 tons, up by 28.4% compared with the same period last year.

In the first quarter, the total transport turnover reached 16.52 billion ton-km, and the number of passengers transported reached 74.078 million, down 46.6 percent and 53.9 percent year on year, respectively.

Answering ThePaper.cn reporter’s question to give some details about the situation of the overseas passenger and cargo charter flights China’s civil aviation has been carrying out recently, deputy director of CAAC operation monitoring center Sun Shaohua said:

“Since the outbreak of COVID 19, the civil aviation administration of China launched the major transport mechanism, as of April 14, a total number of 575 passenger and cargo charter flights were completed, carrying 134 staff of expert group for aid medical treatment and the joint working group, as well as anti-epidemic materials of 9544 tons involving 64 countries including the United States, Britain, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Italy, Japan, South Korea and etc..”

Answering question from «Economic Information Daily» about the operation status of civil aviation industry in Q1 and how will the issued policy help the industry tide over the difficulties. The CAAC spokesman and director of aviation safety office Xiong Jie noted:

“Due to the COVID 19 epidemic, the industry suffered a cumulative loss of 39.82 billion yuan in the first quarter, of which, the airlines suffered a loss of 33.62 billion yuan.

On March 9th, the civil aviation administration issued an announcement concerning the support policy about coping with COVID 19 outbreak, it introduced a package of preferential policies, including exemption from the civil aviation development fund payable by airlines, financial support for major transportation missions in the framework of joint defense and control mechanism deployment under the leadership of state council, reduce some government-managed fees for airports, air traffic control and jet fuel, etc..”
